Mix and Match: The Art of Textures in Interior Design

Mixing and matching textures is a great way to add depth, interest, and personality to your space. Our principal designer Shabnam Gupta shares some tips for incorporating textures into your space:

Start with a neutral base: It’s always a great idea to start with a neutral colour scheme for your walls, floors, and larger furniture pieces. This will provide a backdrop for your textures to stand out against. Beige, cream, grey’s work wonders for a soft classical or an English vibe.

Mix natural and man-made textures: Combining natural materials like wood, stone, and woven textiles with man-made materials like metals & glass can create a dynamic contrast in your space.

Vary the scale: Mix textures of different scales to add visual interest. Why stop with just textures? Play with scales on your wall art, décor, collectibles, everything!

Layer textures: Layering textures can add depth and cosiness to your space. Mix different textiles like rugs, throw pillows, and curtains to create a warm and inviting atmosphere.

Don’t forget about the walls: Textured wall treatments like distressed paint, wood panelling, distressed mirrors or even a soft textured paint can add dimension and interest to your space.

Use contrast: Pair rough with smooth, matte with gloss, and light with dark to create contrast and make each texture stand out.

Pay attention to lighting: Lighting can enhance the textures in your space. Use light fixtures with interesting textures or shadows to draw attention to your favourite design elements.
