Lighting is one aspect which makes your space feel more homely, or more aesthetic. Proper lighting significantly boosts functionality, creates an ambiance, and enhances quality of daily living. It’s a mood setter when it comes to interior design. Here are some key reasons why good lighting is so very important:
Enhances Atmosphere: Lighting sets the mood and atmosphere of a room. Softer, dimmer lighting makes a space feel more relaxed and intimate. While brighter, well-lit spaces can make the room feel more energetic and livelier. Keeping in mind the usage of the space, here in this project, we’ve created layers of lighting. A play of light & shadows formed by hanging lamps, combined with soft muted lighting illuminating the foyer makes way to create a soft, lush yet gorgeous ambiance to this pathway
Affects Perception of Space: Lighting can influence how we perceive the size and shape of a space. Conscious use of lighting can make a room feel larger, cosier, taller, or more intimate. Specific accent lighting can highlight art, features, or draw focal points. In this passage, we’ve used liner tracks along the length of the passage, keeping it minimal yet well-lit.
Highlighting Elements: Properly planned and executed lighting can highlight and accentuate decor, creating a visually appealing and well-balanced environment. Well placed lights can draw attention to specific elements, adding depth and interest to the space. At our Peacock Life store in Hyderabad, ambient & task lighting have been beautifully used. Used here in this corner, picture lights frame & showcase the cover pages of The Orange Lane published in varied articles, thus drawing attention to this space.
Supports Functionality with Artistic Expression: Following a designer’s thought process, creating a working space with proper illumination & soft aesthetics is a very good merger. Lighting fixtures themselves can be great design elements. Apart from the commonly used fixtures like wall scones or
chandeliers, customising a piece will also contribute to the appeal of the space. In the workspace of this beautiful project “Manikarnika Studio” completed by The Orange Lane, a custom-made light feature highlights the wall textures with a funky quote. Along with task lighting for a good workflow, it makes the overall space look very stylish yet functional.
Balances Natural Light: Lighting helps in compensating for the absence of natural light or balancing it. During the day, natural light is preferred, but at night or in darker areas, artificial/ambient lighting is crucial. Certain areas when provided with focus or soft lighting, perks up very well. For example, in a recently completed project here, once can easily make out how the dining table décor perks up with soft overhead hanging lamps, amidst day light. Combine the 2 modes of lighting to get a lovely glow during the day.
Altering Moods: Utilising natural finishes & patterned marble in interior design is a common practice. It converts mundane spaces into a wonderland. Lighting is the key feature to properly showcase the true emotions of such spaces. Each specific room requires a specific type of lighting. The moment you step into a room, the ambience created is what strikes us first. To showcase this example perfectly, in this luxury residential project done by The Orange Lane, this powder washroom is one such place. Rough textures, deep gold tones and black flooring creates a sexy vibe when you step in. Subtle ambient lighting has made this alternation possible.
In summary, lighting is a fundamental element of interior design that affects how we experience and interact with a space. Thoughtful consideration of lighting design, a design that embodies function, appeal and warmth, can transform any space, home or office to a perfectly well-lit composition.
